The Eugene W. J. Pearce, M.D. and Lunetta A. Pearce, M.D. Fellowship in the History of Medicine

Fellowships in the Department of History and Philosophy of Medicine are intended to attract scholars to the Clendening Library and University of Kansas Medical Center Archives who will carry out research in the history of medicine, nursing, allied health and related sciences. The Department will grant fellowships to interested scholars whose research topics are well-suited to the varied collections housed in the library and archives.

The Department intends to grant two fellowships per year, with the aim of attracting scholars from a range of academic levels, including professors, independent researchers, graduate students in the dissertation stage of their degrees, and post-graduate students pursuing advanced scholarship.

Clendening History of Medicine Library Holdings: The library has a large collection of early-modern medical books from Britain and western Europe, which includes botanicals and anatomical works. Comprehensive compilations of 17th -19th c. books include the Thor Jager collection of pathology and cardiology, Rudolf Virchow materials and manuscripts, the Russell L. Haden collection of hematology and microscopy, the Edward H. Skinner collection on electricity and radiology; Haskell F. Norman’s Mesmer and Mesmerism collection, the Logan Clendening Anesthesia collection, the Leonard F. Peltier Orthopedic collection, and the Athanasius Kircher collection. Included with the books and manuscripts are original Florence Nightingale Letters, 18th- and 19th- c. British satirical medical prints, medically related Japanese wood block prints, and mid-20th- c. Chinese public health posters.

University of Kansas Medical Center Archives Holdings: The archives house numerous documents pertaining to the history of the medical center, as well as to local, regional and Kansas medicine. Faculty records, personal papers of prominent local physicians, departmental histories, World War I and World War II medical records are also included, in addition to records of the Schools of Medicine, Nursing and Allied Health.

Other unique collections in the archives holdings include the Paul R. Harrington, MD Archives and the Scoliosis Research Society Archives for those interested in polio and spinal research. Early 20th- c. hospital and medical office patient records, which contain diagnoses, treatments and outcomes, many with hand-written physicians’ and nurses’ notes, are also housed in this collection. These records may be used by qualified researchers with appropriate approval from the University of Kansas Medical Center’s Institutional Review Board.

Duration and Support: The department will grant fellowships for a period of two to four weeks. The amount of the fellowships will be $1000 to cover expenses, with an additional one-time travel stipend of $500 for scholars from outside of the Kansas City area. While in residence, scholars will have use of departmental facilities, including a workspace, desk, photocopying equipment, and a lap-top computer.

Application and Selection: Interested applicants must submit a curriculum vitae, two letters of support, and a brief prospectus of no more than three pages outlining their research project. Selection of fellows will be based on the decision of a committee.

Related Information: At the conclusion of the fellowship, the Department will ask the fellows to report their findings to interested individuals in one of three forms: a History of Medicine luncheon seminar, an evening Department lecture, or a brief report to the Department’s bi-annual newsletter.
