Clinical rotations will generally be of three-month’s duration;
the resident will be assigned to one faculty member per rotation. The
assignments will be made by the director of the training program in
collaboration with the departmental chairman. Responsibilities of the
resident will include:
- Seeing consultations, discussing the patient in detail with the
appropriate faculty member, making treatment recommendations and
dictating the history and physical.
- Participation in the simulation of the patient with the help and
guidance of the faculty member.
- Reviewing the treatment plan with the faculty member.
- Initiating the patient’s treatment and reviewing the port
films and set-ups with the faculty position.
- Following the patients on treatment with the faculty physician,
including weekly visits and writing a progress note.
- Every patient, at conclusion of his/her treatment, will be seen
by the resident together with the faculty physician, at which time
future plans will be discussed and an end-of-treatment report dictated
by the resident.
- Seeing patients in follow-up with faculty physicians and dictating
appropriate notes.
- Sharing in the care of inpatients with the assigned faculty physician.
Residents who have patients in the hospital over the weekend shall
see them or make arrangements for the resident on call to do so.
- Residents shall wear their pagers at all times during the day and
shall inform the on-call resident of any anticipated problems during
after hours.
- Each staff member has research time scheduled each week. During
this time, the resident is responsible for questions or problems
that arise regarding patients on treatment.
- It is expected that the residents will study and read under the
guidance of their individual faculty members.
- Each resident will be expected to review a subject area and present
to faculty and other residents, several times a year.
- It is required that, during the four-year residency, each resident
will perform basic or clinical research and prepare a presentation
and paper suitable for a national meeting or for publication in a
peer-reviewed journal.
- Residents will be expected to work in a harmonious manner with
other members of the Department. It is hoped that, as residents mature
under the guidance of their chief resident and faculty physicians,
they will learn to handle patients, chart work and teaching in an
efficient, responsible and professional manner that will allow all
of us pride in our involvement with the KUMC educational program.
