Clerkship Description

 

This site offers a unique clinical rotation experience.  We are an outpatient clinic serving Native Americans of all ages.  Dispensing is done from charts in a SOAP format.  Complete access t patient medical records is available.  We hold DM clinic twice a week, dispense from protocol when indicated, and review labs and other patient data when refills are requested.  In addition, we do quarterly DUEs and develop new treatment protocols.  This will serve an an introduction to Federal Pharmacy and many opportunities that exist within the Federal System.

 

Responsibilities of the Pharm.D. student may include but are not limited to:

  •     Pharmacy based anticoagulation clinic.

  •     Performing a DUE.

  •     Weekly Journal club.

  •     Participation in Diabetic education.

  •     Participation in monthly P&T meeting.

  •     End of month patient presentation.

  •     Acting as Drug Information resource for Physicians, Nurses, etc.

  •     Medication preparation.

  •     Patient counseling.

Further Opportunities for students may include:

 

  •     Shadowing/assisting Physician.

  •     Shadowing/assisting Lab director.

  •     Triage service with Nursing staff.

  •     Nutrition counseling with Dietician.

 

 

Specific Site Requirements

 

Clinic hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday thru Friday.  Lunch break is 12:00pm to 1:00pm.  The clinic is closed on Tuesday mornings for administrative duties and on all Federal holidays.

 

 

Directions to Site

 

Take 23rd street either from the west or east to Massachusetts street.  Turn south on Massachusetts and drive two blocks.  The clinic will be located on the right side of the street.

 

Student Instructions

 

Please arrive at 8:15 on your first day.  Dress is business casual, please bring lab coat and name tag.  Feel free to pack you lunch, the clinic has a kitchen area for lunch.  A large portion of your rotation will consist of patient counseling.  Please come prepared to counsel patients on Diabetic, blood pressure, pain, and antibiotic medications.   Please e-mail us at least two weeks before your rotation begins at: kelly.battese@ihs.gov   We will respond to confirm your rotation and send you a copy of our formulary.
