General Information

Balls Food Stores is a locally owned grocery chain in the Kansas City metro area.  We offer a community pharmacy setting where customer service and patient contract are top priority.  Students will be involved in activities at their designated pharmacy and weekly meetings as a group.

Goals:

  • Gain awareness and understanding of clinical services and business aspects of community pharmacy through discussions and participation in health fairs.
  • Improve verbal and written communication with patient and other health care providers.
  • Become proficient in retrieving, reviewing, evaluating, and making recommendations for improvement in therapy from patient profiles.
  • Enhance professional and ethical behavior.

Objectives:

  • Actively participate in disease discussions including hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol and respiratory.
  • Counsel and interview patients regarding medication therapy.
  • Review patient cases.
  • Review ambulatory care in a community pharmacy setting including diagnostic test and equipment, disease state management and OTC use.
  • Participation in health fairs.
  • Review business aspects of community pharmacy.
  • Participate in community pharmacy functions including medication maintenance.

 

Site Specific Requirements/Information

Rotations will be 5 days a week and approximately 8 hours per day between the hours of 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM.  Professional dress is required.  White lab jacket is required for specific events and optional at the stores.  References are available on-site.

Detail of Rotational Activities

Students will meet with preceptor for weekly activities including patient and disease discussions.  There will also be time for discussions involving guideline/goals, medications used to treat the disease, and patient counseling.  Group Grand Rounds presentations to other externs and pharmacy personnel are another part of the rotation.  The student will also be involved in publishing a community based pharmacy newsletter.
