Clerkship Description
Home Medical Services offers a full range of products and services for patients at home including:
- infusion therapy
- respiratory care
- rehabilitation equipment
- durable medical equipment (DME)
- health care supplies

Pharmacy Student Goals and Objectives
This site offers an introduction to home infusion services along with other health care services provided in the home.
The student will gain knowledge in the following areas:
Infusion Pharmacy:
- Admix small and large volume sterile products using aseptic technique.
- Assemble Baxa Pump to mix TPN solutions.
- Computerize medication orders to print labels, work orders and delivery tickets.
- Complete patient charts with physician orders, pharmacist notes, lab results, assessments, care plans and medication profiles.
- Schedule patients for deliveries, lab reports, follow-up calls and counseling.
- Purchase and receive drugs and IV supplies.
- Review the financial reports to determine how the company is operating.
- Counsel patients on prescribed medications.
- Participate in the care of patients with other health care providers.
Drivers:
- Ride with a driver to experience the organization needed to effectively operate out of a van which is their "office".
- Observe a driver organizing the route of deliveries, paperwork and equipment/supplies needed for each delivery.
- Observe a driver setting up equipment in the home, teaching patients/caregivers how to use it, and the documentation required.
- Learn the requirements for the arrangements of items in the van.
Accounts Receivable:
- Learn the assignments of responsibilities and the process of confirming orders for billing and the documentation of PARs and CMNs.
- Learn how payments are received, posted, secondary insurance filed and resubmits processed.
- Observe the organization of the patient chart room and filing of paperwork.
Marketing:
- Learn the role of marketers in advertising our services to referrals and handling special requests.
- Observe a marketer making visits/calls with their accounts and how they address service issues.
- Observe their organizational skills in scheduling and following-up their accounts.
Operations:
- Review the process for purchasing, receiving and paying for equipment and supplies.
- Learn the methods to control inventory such that there isn't overstocking, shortages, and pilferage.
