The hospital is one of three psychiatric hospitals operated by the State of Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services and serves as a training site for numerous schools throughout the United States providing internship opportunities in nursing, social welfare, psychology, psychiatry, and pharmacy in addition to other disciplines. Inpatient mental health services are provided for children and adolescents, adult psych, and forensic psych patients. In addition, LSH is home for the Sexual Predator Treatment Program which is the newest program at the hospital. Larned State Hospital also provides pharmacy services for the Larned Juvenile Correctional Facility which is located on the hospital campus. The Pharmacy Department is actively involved in providing patient care services, both medical and psychiatric on campus and is a major participant in medication usage evaluations, patient safety efforts, adverse drug event reporting programs, and educational efforts for both patients and staff. Students completing their clerkship rotation at LSH will be provided opportunities to participate in treatment team meetings, provide patient counseling, provide educational programs for patients and staff, compile medication usage data, receive psychiatric in-service training on campus, perform pharmacy related dispensing functions under the supervision of a pharmacist, and participate in the performance improvement functions of the pharmacy. Specific Site Information To provide additional assistance to students who are participating in internships/clerkships at LSH, the hospital provides housing and meals to students at no charge. Students also are allowed access to the hospital's library facility and computer lab to complete research projects. In addition, all students are allowed to attend any in-service training provided on campus for LSH staff at no charge. Student workload is expected to take at least eight hours each day usually from 8 am to 5pm, Monday through Friday. Variations in these times may be possible with the approval of the supervising pharmacist. Because Larned State Hospital is a mental health facility, professional attire (a lab coat), is optional. In lieu of lab coats students may dress in casual business attire. Directions to Site From Lawrence: Take I-70 West to Ellsworth exit, (exit 225), south on Highway 156.
