Clerkship Description
This rotation will provide the opportunity to work with people with diabetes and provide patient education to them.  The hospital-based comprehensive education program includes both inpatients and outpatients on insulin or oral agents.  The patient population includes children thru the elderly.  These patients participate in group classes Tues-Thursday  8:00 am to 6:00 pm.  Mondays and Fridays will have other diabetes opportunities; outpatient clinic, inpatient rounds with endocrinologists, and inpatient one on one education.   An interdisciplinary team presents all of the classes.  The team consists of ARNPs, registered dietitian, counselor, exercise physiologist and youth educator, all of whom are certified diabetic educators.  Individual sessions are also available.  The student will attend diabetes class the first week of their rotation.   Patient histories and physicals are done on all patients.   Pharmacy students participate in this activity.  

Optional clinical experiences can be scheduled and may include:

  • The diabetes clinic at Hunter Health, a clinic for indigent patients
  • Vitreo retinal specialist observation
  • Outreach clinic site visit and/or telemedicine participation

Professional education that is available includes:

  • Orientation to rotation with printed material, articles, standing orders (this may be provided prior to beginning rotation if desired).
  • Slide review of CDC Diabetes Complications
  • Diabetes CE as occuring during rotation (i.e.. Diabetes Update 6 x per year)
  • Individual and team interactions of case studies and staffing
  • Access to Diabetes Library
  • Article development as desired (co-authored with diabetes team if negotiated)

Research Opportunities

  • Participate in monthly / quarterly R.L. Jackson research meeting at 8:00am on the third Wednesday in the Diabetes Library
  • Observation of research visits for drug studies in outpatient clinic
  • Observation of research visits for NIH Diabetes Prevention Trial

Projects

  • Teach group class (topic is negotiable)
  • Develop patient handout
  • Develop assessment tool for pharmacists
  • Develop / refine website

Specific Site Requirements

  • Park in employee lots
  • Please have white lab coat with name tag, neck tie optional, no jeans.
  • Orientation is 8:00am on the first day of rotation.
  • Lunch is available with the diabetes team at 12:15pm on Tuesday thru Friday.
  • Rounds with the physicians, residents, physicians assistants are usually from 4:00 to 6:00pm daily.  Work-ups are done before and / or after.
  • Housing is occasionally available.
