Clerkship Description
Newman Memorial County Hospital (d/b/a Newman Regional Health) is a 190 bed, HFAP accredited community hospital providing acute, transitional and rehabilitative care for adult, pediatric, geriatric, emergency, ambulatory, and critical care patients.

  • Team of Clinical Pharmacists and Certified Technicians
  • Decentralized pharmacist chart review and patient care
  • Hospital-wide integrated computer system (Meditech), 2006 electronic medical record with bar coding and bedside medication verification
  • IV admixture preparation in MIC including TPN and chemotherapy
  • Pyxis automated distribution system

Clinical Activities:

  • Patient monitoring through chart reviews, staff and patient interaction
  • Patient counseling with focus on narrow therapeutic medications
  • Authority to make dose adjustments for creatinine clearance
  • Pharmacokinetic dosing
  • Antibiotic assessment utilizing culture/sensitivity reports and patient condition
  • IV to PO
  • Adverse Drug Reaction investigation and reporting
  • Member of the Code Blue Team
  • Member of MI, CHF, DVT prophylaxis, pneumonia, hospice teams
  • Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee
  • Medication resource for physicians and nursing staff
  • Medication Therapy Management delegated by the physicians

Central Activities:

  • Supervision of technicians
  • Prescriptions for employees and hospice patients
  • Hospital-wide pharmaceutical order entry

 

Goals

  1. Experience the many roles of a community hospital pharmacist.
  2. Experience the role of our technicians, inventory management, pyxis management and IV and extemporaneous compounding.
  3. Visit ancillary departments
  4. Complete information requests
  5. Present a patient case to pharmacist staff

Our expectation is for this to be an active participation experience.  We recognize that not every students plans to become a hospital pharmacist but it is hoped that your time spent at Newman Regional Health will advance your understanding of the hospital pharmacists' role in patient care, encourage pharmaceutical care in the community pharmacy setting and move us closer to the goal of seamless care.

          

Specific Site Requirements/Information

  • Pharmacy hours are 0600 - 2100 Monday thru Friday and 0700 - 1700 on Saturday, Sunday and holidays.
  • Dress is business casual (no sandals or jeans); white lab coat when on nursing units
  • Starting time on the first day is 0830. 
  • Free parking
  • Discounted cafeteria meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Daily attendance 0830-1640 is expected unless other arrangements have been made

Directions to Site
Emporia is located on I-35 and the Kansas Turnpike between Kansas City and Wichita.

From I-35:  Merchant Street Exit, right on Merchant Street to 12th Avenue; right on 12th (west) 8 blocks to hospital campus.

From Kansas Turnpike:  Exit turnpike and proceed into emporia; at Graphic Arts (1st stop light) turn left and then immediately back right on 12th Avenue and proceed east to hospital campus.  Approximately 1 mile or 16 blocks.
