Clerkship Description
Goal
To expose the fourth professional-year pharmacy student to various departments within the Professional Compounding Centers of America (PCCA) organization while obtaining information that directly relates to contemporary
pharmacy compounding practice.
Learning Objectives
After completion of the four week rotation the student will be able to:
- Discuss the role of the educational department, the quality control laboratory, the drug information department, and the research and design laboratory.
- Discuss use of various types of analytical testing equipment.
- Demonstrate proficiencies of various compounding manipulations.
- Present an educational module to first professional-year pharmacy students in a compounding laboratory.
- Discuss current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) as it relates to compounding pharmacy.
- Describe the set up and use of a business plan as it relates to an independent community practice setting.
- Describe how to conduct meaningful drug information and literature searches.
- Demonstrate understanding of contemporary compounding in a community practice setting by making a final oral presentation to the rotation preceptor and invited guests
Specific Site Requirements/Information
The student will be required to spend the majority of their time in the P*ceutics Institute @ PCCA department. Activities will include, but are not limited to, providing educational presentations in student scholarship compounding
classes, helping with online educational activities, helping in the University of Houston College of Pharmacy compounding laboratory, and attending an International Seminar in Houston.
Other areas of activity will include, but are not limited to, spending time in the consulting department (drug information), attending weekly pharmacy consulting meetings, participating in the research and design laboratory,
quality control laboratory, and marketing services, and spending two to three days in a compounding only pharmacy in Houston.
Student Evaluation
The student will be evaluated based on their ability to satisfactorily complete the stated objectives. In addition, the student will be required to make a final oral presentation demonstrating the knowledge and attitudes they
have developed during the four-week rotation. The presentation will be made to a selected group of individuals from various departments.
