Clerkship Description
This general medicine rotation includes:

  • Medical/Surgical/Intensive Care experience.
  • Participation in pharmacy automatic IV to PO program
  • Automatic Renal dosing program
  • Drug Use Evaluations
  • Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee Activities
  • Medical/Surgical discharge medication education
  • Drug information

Goals

  • Actively participate and effectively communicate (both verbally and in writing) with members of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Identify and discuss the following:

    a) Practical information: generic name, brand name,     dose, dosage form, route of administration and administration time.

    b) Indication for use.

    c) Appropriateness of the drug for the stated indication.

    d) Appropriateness of the dose for the individual patient.

    e) Therapeutic alternatives, based on efficacy, toxicity, cost and risk-benefit.

    f) Food and/or drug interactions.

    g) Side effects and adverse reactions.

    h) Monitoring parameters.

    i) Role of prescribed in the overall management of the patient's condition.

  • Assist in the continuity of care between the outpatient and inpatient settings by taking thorough medication histories.

  • Actively participate in topic discussions with the preceptor several times per week.

  • Effectively present a case/topic presentation at the end of the rotation.

  • Participate in data collection and reporting of drug utilization reviews.

  • Complete daily clinical activities for patient care areas as assigned.

Specific Site Requirements/Information

Rotation is designed to provide the student day to day responsiblities in a "real world" clinical situation.  Projects are encouraged which will be a lasting contibution to our hospital after the student leaves.  

Directions to Site

I-435 North (Kansas) of I-70.  Exit I-435 on State Avenue East.  Continue East to 90th Street, turn left (North) on 90th Street 1/2 mile to hospital.
