Clerkship Description
Salina Regional Health Center is a large rural hospital in north central Kansas.   Located in a city of approximately 50,000, the 250 bed hospital provides the residents of the surrounding 17 counties with comprehensive health care services.

Pharmacy services provided at SRHC include:

  • Aminoglycoside dosing service
  • Decentralized clinical monitoring and intervention
  • Skilled nursing unit medication profile reviews
  • Participation in interdisciplinary team meetings
  • Inpatient/outpatient education
  • Pyxis systems
  • Chemotherapy admixture
  • IV admixture
  • Unit dose distribution
  • Ongoing education programs for pharmacists

Educational opportunities for Pharm.D. students at SRHC include:

  • Participation in a pharmacokinetic dosing program
  • Participation in decentralized clinical interventions
  • Attendance at multidisciplinary meetings
  • Participation in resident lunch conferences
  • Participation in daily rounds with residents
  • Observational opportunities in cardiology, radiology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, dialysis and dietary

Goals

  • Actively participate and effectively communicate (both verbally and written) with members of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Understand and perform the following duties:

            a)    Order entry/dispensing

            b)    Cart-fill/use of automated machines

            c)    Unit-dose packaging

            d)    IV admixture, including use of sterile technique and the 

                    preparation of IV's, parenteral nutrition, 

                    and chemotherapy.

            e)    Compounding

  • Discharge counseling to patients.

  • Understand inventory process, expiration dating, and medication formulary.

  • Provide drug information, recommendations and consultations.

  • Effectively present a topic presentation.

  • Effectively present a journal article.

Specific Site Requirements/Information

Living arrangements:

  • Housing is provided free of charge on a first come-first served basis.
  • Access to the SRHC fitness center is provided free of charge.
  • Smoky Hill Family Practice will provide needed health care services for a marginal charge.

Parking:

  • Parking is available free of charge in any designated SRHC employee parking lot.

Cafeteria Services:

  • Employee cafeterias are available on both campuses as well as the Terrace Grill on the Santa Fe campus.

Library Services:

  • MEDLINE is available through the internet.
  • A computer is available that is equipped with internet access, Micromedex, word processing, and the pharmacy system.
  • A selection of medical journals is available, as well as selected pharmacy journals.
  • Reference texts are also available in the pharmacy.

Required Equipment:

  • Short white lab coat
  • Name tag
  • Calculator
  • 3.5" computer disks (if you will need to use the computer)
  • Notebook
