The pharmacy provides the following services to their patients
Students will learn how to do a cardiovascular risk assessment, learn how to apply the ADA Clinical Practice Guidelines, JNC VI, and ATP III as a non-physician primary care provider. They will observe and participate in physical assessment, not just a blood pressure and correct height/weight, but at a minimum performing and assessing ankle brachial index (ABI) and diabetic foot exam with monofilament. They will observe and be able to perform a cardiopulmonary exam by auscultation. They will see how to use motivational interviewing techniques to allow the patients to make the changes that are in their best interests. They will also understand how to initiate and optimize medications after evaluating physical and laboratory data. Each student must bring their own stethoscope and lab jacket. SFIH also services several field clinics in which the students may be assigned to gain additional experience. SFIH offers an experiential program in ambulatory/institutional care, which exposes the student to many activities. The students routinely screen the patient's chart for appropriate therapy and drug interactions, fill and process the order, check for completeness of the order and counsel the patient.
