Please read the following information before completing your rotation selection form:
Rotation selection forms must be turned in to Dr. Jim Kleoppel by
4:00pm, February 1, 2008.
Please do not contact preceptors and ask them questions about what you will be
doing if you sign up for a rotation at their site. If you do have a
specific question about a site, please contact Dr. Jim Kleoppel.
Australia
If you interested in going to Australia, please submit your CV and a short essay
(no more than 250 words) on what you think you can contribute to the exchange program and
what you think you would gain from the experience. Essay and CV needs to
be turned in to Dr. Jim Kleoppel..
Camps
If you are interested in going to any of the pediatric camps this summer, please
write a short essay (no more than 250 words) on what you think you can contribute to the
camp and what you think you would gain from going to camp. Essay needs to
be turned in to Dr. Jim Kleoppel. Please be aware that the camps will do background checks on all
counselors/students. Camp schedules are not yet finalized for this year but based on
last year, the following can be expected:
Diabetic Camp (late July-early August)
Need approximately 6-8 students
Heme/Onc Camp (mid-June)
Need 2 students
Hemophilia Camp (early to mid-August)
Need 2 male students
Renal Dialysis Camp (early to mid-August)
Need 2 students
Camps usually last about 1 week. If you are selected to go to camp you will be
expected to spend the entire time there (24 hours/day).
Drug Information
There will be a few drug info rotations available from mid-May to mid-June.
These typically fill up very quickly and students moving to Wichita (or out of town) to
do the rest of their rotations will get first priority.
Financial Aid
If you require financial aid for the summer you will need to be enrolled in at
least 8 hours (2 rotations). Please note that on the rotation selection form.
Housing
It is the student's responsibility to arrange for their own housing. As we
stated when you entered pharmacy school, it may be necessary to place you on a rotation
outside of the area in which you live. In case we need this information, we ask you
to specify if you have a preference as to where that place is.
Requirements
The following rotations are required:
- Drug Information
- Hospital Pharmacy
- Community Retail Pharmacy
- Two Clinical Rounding Rotations at a Teaching Institution
The remaining rotations will be assigned to give you a broad range of experiences.
Residencies
If you are planning on doing a residency, it will be much easier if you request
December and February off. In December, you will want to attend the ASHP Mid-Year
meeting and in February, you will need to schedule interviews.
If you are planning on doing a specialized residency, let us know what your area of
interest is and we will schedule you for that rotation before the ASHP Mid-Year meeting
you will be able to interview more effectively.
Place of Employment
In general, we avoid assigning students to a rotation in any site in which you
have been employed. Exceptions to this would be only for students that have been
employed in the pharmacy of teaching hospitals that we use for clinical rotation
sites.
Changing Rotations
Except in very unusual circumstances, students will not be allowed to change
rotations once they have been assigned. Changes may occasionally be made at the
request of preceptors if the need arises (i.e., employment changes, maternity leaves,
etc.)
Additional note:
First of all, we will try very hard to match your areas of interest.
This will be much easier for us to do if you choose a broad variety of specialty
areas. It is our goal to expose you to various areas of pharmacy that you may not
have yet encountered and to make assignments among students that are comparable in
difficulty (over the 9 months of rotations).
Please keep in mind that there are a limited number of rotations at each site.
Most sites do not accept students every month so do not assume that a site is available if
no student is scheduled. Site availability is determined by the site
preceptor, not by the School of Pharmacy. Please recognize that preceptors
take students as a professional courtesy and conduct yourselves in a manner that shows
respect for this courtesy.
